Rules & Regs for the BWCA
(Similar regulations apply to Quetico Provincial Park.)
To preserve the values that you are coming to experience,
certain rules must be followed. In accepting the permit, you, as a party
leader, agree to be responsible for any violation of the following:
1. Cans and glass bottles are not
allowed. Containers of fuel, insect repellent, medicines, personal toilet
articles, and other items that are not food or beverages are the only cans
and bottles that you may bring with you. The promise to "pack it out" is not
an excuse for being in possession of these items.
2. Nine (9) people are the maximum
allowed per travel party. You may not exceed this limit at any time or
anywhere (on the water, portages, campsites, etc.) in the wilderness.
3. You must camp at U.S. Forest
Service developed campsites that have steel firegrates and wilderness box
latrines.
4. Open campfires are allowed only
within the steel firegrates at developed campsites.
5. Drown your campfires with water
and stir the ashes to be sure they are dead out each time you leave your
campsite.
6. You must enter the BWCAW at the
entrance point and on the date shown on your visitor's permit. The permit
can only be picked-up by the party leader that requested the permit or his
pre-arranged alternate. If neither of these people can pick-up the permit
personally, a new permit must be reserved in advance.
7. You must use only dead and down
material obtained away from campsites and lakeshore for fire fuels. It is
unlawful and damaging to cut, peel, or deface live trees, shrubs, or boughs.
It is also unlawful to take wood from beaver dams or lodges.
8. Use latreen toilet facilities at
existing campsites or at least 150 feet back from the waters edge.
9. Collection of archaeological or
historic material is prohibited.
10. Motor-powered watercraft (with
a 25 horsepower limit) are permitted on designated lakes as follows: Moose
Lake Chain to Basswood Lake via Newfound and Sucker, Fall Lake Chain to
Basswood Lake via Newton, and Basswood Lake except north of Washington
Island. |
