Adult Leadership
On the unit level, two adults should be secured to oversee the trip. If you will have more than 9 total participants, additional adults will be needed to head up each sub-group. By regulation, no more than 9 people may travel or camp together in the BWCA (US), and/or Quetico Park (Canada). However, we often have groups which reach 40 or more people. This just necessitates splitting the party into sub-groups under the mandated sizes. The more adults that are involved in the planning, even if they won't be attending, lessens the load for everyone. Be sure to let the senior boys do some of the planning; guide them around major errors, but let them fall into smaller problems.

Secure a BSA National Travel Permit Application from your council office. This is a great planning tool, and a requirement for trips more than 500 miles from the council office. The major items addressed are: participants, dates, costs, and transportation. North Country Canoe Outfitters will take care of all equipment, food, permits, and fishing licenses.

Youth Participants
Announce your trip to the unit in the fall. This will give your boys time to work out the details with their parents. Also, it will give the adults who will l be participants to work out vacation dates with their employers. Some physical preparation and stamina will be required for a successful trip. While we can easily tailor your trip to your group's ability level, remember: "IT IS A WILDERNESS AREA!" Portages are not park trails. Head winds blow hard while you are traveling. Mental and physical maturity should be a significant consideration (though not an absolute requirement) when accepting scouts (and adults) for the trip. In the canoe country, egos should take a back seat to real physical preparation. We recommend everyone have a physical exam by a physician!

Because you will be forwarding non-refundable deposit money with your reservation, charge a down payment to sign up for the trip. By having the firm commitment of "money on the table" you can be assured of meeting minimum numbers needed for our group rates, and not having to "cover" for dropouts and no-shows
