Golf courses in Minnesota are not built in defiance of the natural environment, but rather in celebration of it. The difference is both dramatic and spectacular. Shoot a roll of film on most links, and half of your photos will be post card quality. Plush green fairways sculpted through pristine national forests. Rolling terrain and undulating greens. Unique landscaping. Shimmering blue lakes under cobalt blue skies.

On the courses in the Ely area, you will find Nature magnified. Experience total isolation and natural beauty on meticulously manicured tees, fairways, and greens. A unique and sometimes hard-to-believe combination. Golf here is a walk in the woods that cannot help but improve a game. If you take your game seriously, you'll find plenty of demanding opportunities to push your skills on championship courses. These courses will challenge golfers who think their shots out, and plan on using every club in the bag.

Shot selection, man-made and natural hazards, pin placement -- it all comes into play. And, of course, there are alternate tees for the faint of heart.

An excellent variety of quality courses are within a short drive of Pine Point Lodge. Expect a warm, Minnesota welcome and a friendly commitment to providing the best golf experience to everyone who comes to play. Yes, remember to keep your head down during your swing. But don't forget to look around and soak up the majestic views. There's even the chance that you'll have to let a deer or moose play through.

The crown jewel of the Ely area golf courses is GIANTS RIDGE, about 45 minutes away in Biwabik. Masterfully sculpted out of the rugged beauty of the Superior National Forest, Giants Ridge offers the ultimate expression of what a golf course can be. As all of the photos on this page (above & right) clearly show, "The Ridge" delivers the challenge golfers seek in a top-quality course.

In addition to Giants Ridge, Minnesota's Wild North is home to over 20 other great golf courses. Within this grouping of links you'll experience shimmering lakes under cobalt blue skies, cool, clean air, and spectacular views. Rental equipment and carts are available. The closest courses to Pine Point Lodge are:

  1. ELY GOLF COURSE: A 9-hole par-36 course about eight miles from your cabin. The 3,245 yards of this course have been carved out of the woods and has water hazards on two holes. The two par-3s require a fairly accurate tee shot (or be ready to take the penalty).

  2. BABBIT GOLF COURSE A few miles beyond Ely's course are the 9 holes (par-35) of Babbit. A fairly flat and open course, the 3,022 yards won't "gobble-up" balls like some of the others, but get off the fairway, and you will probably have a great lie ... but behind a tree.

  3. VIRGINIA GOLF COURSE An 18-hole par-71 fairly flat course is about an hour's drive from the resort. A few ponds and some well placed trees make for an interesting round of 6,226 yards.

  4. EVELETH GOLF COURSE This 9-hole course is just a little farther out than Virginia. This rolling course of 3,168 yards has well placed greens that are often framed on the backside by trees. Several holes parallel a portion of a northwoods lake. Par is 36.
